Tale mwdwinterfaccia a riga di comando è di tipo testuale, come quella di un mweaterminale, quindi è priva di grafica mwequser friendly. Con la nascita della famiglia di sistemi operativi mwfwWindows e della mwgashell mwgqExplorer, command.com ha perso la sua importanza, ma è rimasto sempre presente, impiegato come mwggconsole di mwgwWindows e per eseguire mwhafile batch. Nelle versioni di mwhqWindows di famiglia NT si è evoluto nel mwhgcmd.exe (presente nella mwhwdirectory System32 dell'mwiainstallazione di Windows), anche se fino a mwiqWindows XP è presente, insieme ad mwigesso, come mwiwMicrosoft Windows DOS.
